Purpose: To assess binocular visual function in mild and moderate primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients aged from 20 to 59.
Materials and Methods: Sixty-seven subjects were recruited of which 40 were classified as POAG patients, and 27 were normal subjects. The glaucoma group was included patients with unilateral or bilateral POAG diagnosed by the ophthalmologist. The subjects having one or more of the following criteria were excluded: amblyopia, cataract, corneal refractive and intraocular surgery, anisometropia. All selected subjects were assessed with visual acuity in the LogMAR scale, IOP (intraocular pressure), spherical equivalent, MD (mean deviation), VFI (visual field index), RNFL (retinal nerve fiber layer) thickness, phoria angle, NPC (near point of convergence), fusion amplitude, sensory suppression, stereoacuity, and quality of life. The statistical analysis was carried out with the SPSS 21.0, p value under 0.05 was taken as statistically significant.
Results: There were no difference in age, sex, spherical equivalent refractive power, corrected visual acuity, IOP between normal and glaucoma group. However MD, VFI, RNFL thickness were significantly different between two groups (p<0.05). In the binocular visual function, there were differences in near phoria angle, NPC, near positive total convergence, far and near positive fusional reserve and stereoacuity (p<0.05). The satisfaction of visual life decreased in summary score, peripheral vision, glare and dark adaptation (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Patients with mild and moderate POAG showed increased exophoria in near vision and far-distance NPC, decreased near positive total convergence, decreased far and near fusional reserve, loss of stereoacuity, low quality of life related to peripheral vision and adaptation of light.
